Course Description


This course is designed to apply and enhance algebra, problem solving, and graphing skills developed in MATH1034. We begin with a complex application (The Hydro Problem) to find we are missing mathematical tools to efficiently solve the problem. We set out to explore limits, continuity, differentiation, and integration and their applications to learn the tools needed to solve problems involving the rate of change of quantities. We revisit The Hydro Problem to apply the concepts explored throughout the course to realize we now have more effective tools than trial and error to calculate a solution to the problem.

Course Learning Outcomes


When you have earned credit for this course, you will have demonstrated the ability to:

Demonstrate Proficiency in Manipulating Algebraic Expressions Manipulate polynomial, rational, radical, and logarithmic expressions involving real numbers. Evaluate, simplify, and manipulate linear and non-linear formulae. Manipulate and make calculations with functions. Evaluate domain, range, and restrictions of functions.

Interpret and Calculate Limits and Continuity within Functions Calculate limits for functions. Distinguish between continuous and discontinuous functions. Determine points of discontinuity of functions.

Articulate the Meaning of, and Demonstrate Proficiency in Calculating Derivatives Discover the meaning of the derivative of a function using limits, then apply differentiation rules to calculate derivatives. Calculate the slope and the equation of a line tangent to a curve at a given point. Calculate the slope and equation of a line normal to a curve at a given point. Calculate the derivative of an implicit function using implicit differentiation. Calculate higher order derivatives of a function.

Solve Applied Problems using Differentiation Find absolute and local maximum and minimum points on a curve. Test whether a point is a local or absolute maximum or minimum point. Find points of inflection on a curve. Graph curves and regions with the aid of the First Derivative Test and the Second Derivative Test. Compute velocity and acceleration. Apply the principles of differential calculus to solve related rate problems and applied maximum-minimum problems.

Demonstrate Proficiency Working with Definite and Indefinite Integrals Calculate indefinite integrals. Use integration by substitution. Verify an integral by differentiating. Solve differential equations. Evaluate the constant of integration, given boundary conditions. Evaluate definite integrals. Apply the Fundamental theorem of Calculus to determine exact areas under curves.

ASSESSMENT POLICY:
Students are required to write all tests and submit all assignments when scheduled.  Late assignments may be considered at the discretion of the professor for a reduced grade based on a late penalty of 5% per day (starting from the date and time due).

Supervised rewriting or make-up testing is at the discretion of the professor and may require attending additional tutorials. A maximum of one assessment can be rewritten or made up per semester.

Students should keep all graded assignments and course work for future reference.

For assignments completed outside of class, students must use the assignment template provided, ensure that their submission is only their own work, and ensure no copies of the assignment are made or shared with other students.

AUDIO RECORDING AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES:
Students are requested to ask permission to audio record a class, and permission will not be unreasonably withheld. Students registered with Accessible Learning whose accommodation needs require audio-recorded lectures may do so but may be asked to turn off the recorder during discussion time. The audio recording is intended for academic purposes, and to be used in a manner that respects individuals’ privacy. Mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and other electronic devices will be used for several in-class activities.
